Dan Mann/surf artist
Dan Mann’s surfboard career has been quietly pushing the envelope for more than 25 years. Riding waves big and small, good and bad has resulted in unique high performance shortboards, longboards, and paddleboards. The subtle (and not so subtle) differences in Mann’s boards highlight how important it is to continuously take fresh looks at design and materials.
Mannkine surfboards took center stage when Kelly Slater was seen riding the FRK Roundtail in 2017. Slater’s love for the shape resulted in the release of the FRK in collaboration with Slater Designs and Firewire Surfboards.
Dan Mann, a sun-kissed, down to earth Southern Californian has called San Diego home after moving there from Maui, Hawaii at the age of 12. He started surfing at a young age and was always in the ocean. Mann’s interest in shaping grew from repairing his own boards as a young teen, to shaping and then glassing. He eventually made the leap into professional shaping with the inception of his own brand, Mannkine, in 1996.
Mann’s love for being in and near the ocean led to a long background as a lifeguard, surfer and champion prone-paddle boarder. Mann was on the shaping scene for a long time, and the lucky story of the FRK thrust him into the shaping spotlight. The board made for Kelly Slater in 2015, sat in Slater’s storage for two years, un-surfed. Kelly gave the board a spin in the summer of 2017 when the board was seen by surfers under Slater’s feet during his performances on it at Lower Trestles and Jeffery’s Bay.
Mann’s intense attention to detail has led to endless custom surfboards as well as surfboard models like the Dominator 2, FRK, Mash Up, Sweet Potato, and TJ Pro. His designs are backed by loving to surf all kinds of waves on all kinds of boards.
